DIY Tips To Unclog Your Drains

#1 Drain Cleaning Tip: Baking Soda and Vinegar

This combination of baking soda and vinegar makes for a great drain cleaner, and it can even help remove a clog in your drain. This really works especially when you use it with boiling water.

  1. Sprinkle a cup of baking soda down the drain, and then follow that up with a cup of white vinegar. Let is stay in the drain overnight, and in the morning finish it off with boiling water. You can do this for your drains once a week as a preventive measure for clogging.
  2. Another way is to pour a cup of baking soda down the drain. Then follow that up with 2 cups of boiling water. After a few minutes, pour another cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar. When the bubbles disappear, pour 2 cups of boiling water down the drain. This is a method that you can do once a month.

#2 Drain Cleaning Tip: Baking Soda and Salt

This time, mix 1 part of baking soda, 1 part of salt, and 4 parts of boiling water. Mix them all together, and then dump the mix down the drain. Let it sit overnight. In the morning, pour hot water down the drain.

#3 Drain Cleaning Tip: Sodium Carbonate

This is sometimes called soda crystals or washing soda. You can buy this in the detergent section in the grocery. Mix 1 part sodium carbonate with 1 part hot water. Pour this mixture down the drain overnight, and again you should pour some hot water down the drain in the morning.

#4 Drain Cleaning Tip: Plain Boiling Water

When you have some grease in your drain, pouring cold water down the drain will only harden the grease further. So heat a pot of water on your stove and then pour the water down the drain once it boils. If you’re an impatient fellow, you can try adding some salt to the water. Some people swear that this will make the water boil faster.

The hot water can melt some of the grease and grime in your drain. This can also work when your drain is clogged, and you can use it until the clog is cleared.

#5 Drain Cleaning Tip: Soda

Did you know that Coca Cola or Pepsi can also help you clean or unclog your drain? Now it may not have a successful track record compared to baking soda, but at least it’s better than chemical cleaners. It can work because it contains phosphoric acid, and that’s more acidic than lemon juice.

You need to get a room temperature can or bottle of Coke or Pepsi, which you can dump down the drain. Wait an hour or two, and then pour hot water.
